From director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) comes the new action thriller PIRANHA 3D. Every year the population of sleepy Lake Victoria explodes from 5,000 to 50,000 for Spring Break, a riot of sun and drunken fun. But this year, there’s something more to worry about than hangovers and complaints from local old timers; a new type of terror is about to be cut loose on Lake Victoria. After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of the prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the areas new razor-toothed residents. The film stars Jessica Szohr (Gossip Girl), Steven R. McQueen (The Vampire Diaries), Elisabeth Shue, Jerry OConnell, Ving Rhames, Adam Scott, Richard Dreyfuss, Christopher Lloyd, and Kelly Brook.
Did you know? According to Aja, filming was delayed from winter 2008 to spring 2009 to ensure that the water would be warm enough for the hordes of extras to comfortably enact getting torn to bits by piranhas.
The Reviews:
Rotten Tomatoes : Playing exactly to expectations for a movie about killer fish run amok,Piranha 3-D dishes out gore, guffaws and gratuitous nudity with equal glee.
Yahoo Users: One of the goriest horror movies ever made! overall grade B
Cincinnati Enquirer : The buzz: In the works since the 3D revival was just starting to take shape, “Piranha 3D” brings a new dimension to the cult ‘70s horror-comedy and “Jaws” rip-off directed by Joe Dante and written by John Sayles. This version is directed by Alexandre Aja, whose mixed track record in horror includes the stylish “High Tension,” disturbing “Hills Have Eyes” remake and horribly dull “Mirrors.” Oh, and the cast claims the movie, which originally wasn’t going to screen for critics to review, is Oscar bait.
Forgive the spoiler, but here’s everything you need to judge whether or not you should check out “Piranha 3D”: Buy a ticket and you’ll see a severed penis floating in the water promptly devoured by flesh-eating fish. Either you recognize the humor in such cartoonish depravity, or you don’t. “Piranha” definitely does, and it’s all the more shameless a guilty pleasure for it. Aja has whipped up a potent 82-minute mix of blood, boobs, more blood and unnecessarily professional ensemble acting. Everyone on screen, from game vets Shue and Scott to up and comers McQueen and Szohr to busty babe Kelly Brook, perfectly fit their agreeably one dimensional roles. Even viewers who can’t appreciate a severed member should smile at the thought of “Jaws” star Richard Dreyfuss in a cameo as a doomed fisherman or “Back to the Future’s” Christopher Lloyd slipping effortlessly back into mad scientist mode. As tasteless as it is, “Piranha” just wants to have fun. And it’s so good-natured in its approach to trashy entertainment that it’s hard to resist the ride. Provided you’re not too busy vomiting in the aisles.
