[Butcher Block] Godfather of Gore Lucio Fulci’s ‘The Beyond’

by Brad Snyder
Butcher Block is a weekly series celebrating horror’s most extreme films and the minds behind them. Dedicated to graphic gore and splatter, each week will explore the dark, the disturbed, and the depraved in horror, and the blood and guts involved. For the films that use special effects of gore as an art form, and the fans that revel in the carnage, this series is for you. Herschell Gordon Lewis may be known as the Godfather of Gore, but it’s a title that he shares with one other; Italian gore master Lucio Fulci. With over 50 films in his filmography ranging from [...]

‘Goosebumps 2’ Ensemble Cast Includes Your Favorite Kid from ‘IT’!

by Brad Snyder
Plot details are still unknown for the tentatively titled Goosebumps 2, and we don’t even know if Jack Black will be returning, but a cast of young stars is taking shape. Variety reports tonight that Jeremy Ray Taylor, Ben from last year’s IT, will star alongside Madison Iseman (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle), Ben O’Brien (Manchester by the Sea) and Caleel Harris (“Castle Rock”). Last we heard, Sony was releasing the film October 12, 2018, but that’s likely to change. Ari Sandel (The Duff) is developing the project as director. Neal H. Moritz of Original Film and Deborah Forte of Silvertongue Films are producing.

McKenna Grace Will Play ‘The Bad Seed’ in Rob Lowe’s Remake

by Brad Snyder
Yes, Rob Lowe is directing and starring in a remake of the classic 1956 Oscar-nominated thriller The Bad Seed for Lifetime, and the evil little kid has just been found. Deadline reports that McKenna Grace (Amityville: The Awakening, I Tonya) has been cast to play Emma in the film, the titular Bad Seed. Patty McCormack, who nabbed herself an Oscar nomination playing the young girl in the original, will co-star as the psychiatrist who treats Emma. “Lowe will star as a father who seems to have everything under control. But when a terrible tragedy takes place at his daughter Emma’s school, he is forced to question [...]

Nightmare Rewind to the 1992 “Freddy Speaks” Documentary

by Brad Snyder
Grab a glass of warm milk, slip on those PJs, and drift off into a time warp with Robert Englund and one of the coolest retro documentaries on the A Nightmare On Elm Street series. Originally aired and produced by Showtime back in September 1992, Robert Englund gloriously discusses the evolution and genesis of Freddy Krueger. In a sort of twisted eulogy on the heels of the (at the time) final film, Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, Englund highlights some of Krueger’s greatest achievements in the world of pop culture, while also diving into what exactly makes Freddy tick. Heather Langenkamp, Robert Shaye, [...]

‘Dream Child’ Gets Some Love With NECA’s “Chef Freddy” Figure [Toy Fair]

by Brad Snyder
A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child may not be the franchise’s best outing – I’d argue it’s the worst of the original series – but that isn’t stopping NECA from giving it a little action figure love. Along with the previously unveiled “Tuxedo Freddy” from Dream Warriors, NECA has “Chef Freddy” on display at Toy Fair. The 8″ retro-style figure is of course based on Greta’s gruesome death in The Dream Child, wherein Freddy (in chef attire) force-feeds her to death. It looks like the figure will even include the little Greta voodoo doll! Images via ToyArk.

The CW Reviving Sci-fi Series “Roswell” With Jeanine Mason as Lead

by Brad Snyder
Yet another TV show from the past is coming back to life. The original incarnation of “Roswell” premiered in October 1999 on The WB, running three seasons for a total of 61 episodes. It was based on the 10-book Roswell High series, which chronicled the adventures of three teen aliens and their human friends, who attend the fictional Ulysses F. Roswell High in Roswell, New Mexico. Deadline reports tonight that “Grey’s Anatomy” star Jeanine Mason has been cast in the leading role of The CW’s “Roswell,” a reboot of the late ’90s/early 2000s series. The CW has ordered a pilot episode for the [...]

WORLD OF DEATH Ep. 156 – Pigskin

by Brad Snyder
This week’s World of Death installment serves up a large helping of psychological dread pitted against a backdrop of 70’s infused high school horror. If you were a fan David Mitchell’s “It Follows”, this is an episode not to be missed! Pigskin opens with the striking image of a girl staring into the never-ending underbelly of her school’s bleachers. An image director Jake Hammond uses as a symbolic warning before unravelling a twisted tale of mental illness, toxic masculinity and schoolyard pressures. Style oozes from Pigskin. The thumping synths and neon-lit hallways provide a nostalgic snapshot for fans of retro [...]

Name a more romantic duo. We’ll wait. If you’re looking for true romance with a horror twist, look no further than 1991’s The Addams Family, which offers up so much genuine affection between Gomez and Morticia that it’s kinda the perfect movie to cuddle up with on Valentine’s Day. Which is why El Rey Network is airing the film at 8:30pm EST tonight, Valentine’s Day!
